THE WELLNESS UPDATE
How well do you take care of your heart?
Your heart works around the clock to keep you going—are you giving it the care it deserves? Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., but the good news is that protecting your heart doesn’t have to be complicated.
Quick check:
Do you know your blood pressure and cholesterol levels?
High blood pressure and cholesterol can quietly strain your heart, increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association recommends checking blood pressure at least once a year and cholesterol levels every 4-6 years, or more often if you have risk factors. Knowing your numbers helps you take action early—aim for regular check-ups!Are you mindful of your whole grain intake?
Whole grains provide fiber, which helps lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar, and support overall heart health. Aim to make at least half of your grains whole. Examples include oats, brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat products. You can also look for “100% whole grain” as the first ingredient on nutrition labels to ensure you're getting the benefits. When’s the last time you did something active, just for fun?
Physical activity strengthens the heart, improves circulation, and helps you maintain healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Just 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, can greatly reduce your risk for CVD.
A little effort goes a long way when it comes to heart health. Start with one small change today!
