Medicaid

Medicaid is a jointly funded federal and state program that provides health coverage and resources to millions of eligible Americans. Those eligible include low-income individuals, families, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. Each state’s Medicaid program is uniquely packaged and administered to their residents. However, the program at its foundation covers a broad range of health and long-term care services. While there are certain “mandatory” services required by federal rules that each state Medicaid program covers, some states elect to cover optional services as well.

Mandatory services included in Medicaid:

  • Adult nursing facility services
  • Hospital and physician care
  • Home health services
  • Inpatient and outpatient hospital services
  • Laboratory and X-ray services

Elected optional benefits possibly included in Medicaid (varies by state):

  • Case management
  • Dental
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Prescription drugs
  • Vision
