NUTRITION CORNER

Canned Fruits & Vegetables: Are they healthy?

Canned fruits and vegetables offer convenience, but are they as nutritious as their fresh counterparts? For the most part, yes!

Commercially canned fruits and vegetables are typically harvested and canned within a few hours, preserving the nutrients and flavor of peak freshness. Most of the nutrients remain unchanged in the canning process too.  Another benefit is their long shelf-life which helps many people avoid food waste.

Tips for Using Canned Foods:

- Check labels: look for "low sodium“ or “no salt added”
- When buying canned fruit, select ones canned in water or 100% fruit juice
- Rinse or drain canned beans and vegetables to reduce the sodium content

In short, canned goods are an affordable way to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet.
