There are many ways in which our environment influences our health. From clean air and water to safe places to access nature in our communities, there are countless factors in our environment that impact our well-being.

Undoubtably, some of these factors are not in our control. However, we all can take steps to contribute to and advocate for the health of the environment in our communities and at home.

Characteristics of Environmental Wellness

Environmental wellness refers to one's relationship to their surroundings and the health of the planet. It recognizes the interdependence between individuals and their world. Someone who is environmentally well usually recognizes these principles:

1. Awareness and Understanding: Recognizing the connection between nature, people, and all living things. Recognizing the impact of personal choices on the environment.

2. Sustainable Living: Making conscious decisions that reduce one's negative impact on the environment.

3. Connection with Nature: Regularly spending time outdoors and engaging in activities that allow for relaxation and rejuvenation in natural settings.

4. Healthy Living Spaces: Ensuring that personal living spaces are free from toxins, pollutants, and other hazards, and that they promote a sense of well-being.

5. Respect for All Living Things: Understanding and valuing the diversity of life on our planet and advocating for the preservation of habitats and species.

What You Can Do if Your Environmental Wellness is Low

Do you have an appreciation for the nature found where you live? Is your home environment inviting and clean? Environmental wellness starts with having an awareness of how your environment affects you. Consider these strategies to improve your wellbeing and the environment:

Educate Yourself- Stay informed about environmental issues and solutions. The more you know, the more effectively you can make sustainable choices.

Community Involvement- Participate in community-based environmental initiatives, like clean-up campaigns, tree planting, or local conservation efforts.

Use Non-toxic Cleaning Products- Some cleaning products contain harmful substances. Look for products with the EPA’s “Safer Choice” label and turn on a fan or open a window to keep air circulating while you clean.

Be Mindful of Air Quality: Air pollution is a real concern and can zap your energy when it enters your lungs. If air quality is poor outdoors, avoid strenuous activities outside (check your local air quality at www.airnow.gov). Reduce air pollutants in your home such as candles, incense, and wood-burning fires.

Eliminate Toxins In Your Home- Test your home for radon levels and if it was built before 1978, test exposed paint for lead. Use vent fans or dehumidifiers in damp spaces like your basement to prevent the growth of mold.

Connect with Nature- Regularly spend time in a natural setting available to you such as a local park, tree-lined street, or your back patio. Take time to appreciate whichever natural spaces bring you relaxation.

Live Sustainably- Make conscious decisions to protect the planet, such as using energy-efficient appliances, reducing water waste, and using sustainable transport options.

The Impact on Other Dimensions of Wellness

When you are in tune with your environment and feel supported by it, you will find that it has a broader impact on your health and wellbeing than you might realize at first.

Financial Wellness: energy and resource-saving practices are not just good for the environment, but for your wallet too! Implementing eco-friendly practices can reduce your energy bills and save you money.

Physical Wellness: having clean air, safe drinking water, and an environment free of toxins are all vital to keeping your body healthy.

Emotional & Spiritual Wellness: spending time in nature is like a soothing balm to the brain. Our stress levels are lower when we’re in nature and many find nature inspiring.

We encourage you to take a proactive role in assessing and enhancing your environmental wellness. Whether it's through education, community involvement, sustainable living, or simply spending more time in nature, every effort counts. These small steps not only reduce your environmental footprint but also promote a more sustainable and healthier existence for yourself and future generations.
